Assisted Reproduction – Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) with mild administration of drugs2019-06-28T06:46:50+00:00

Project Description

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) with mild administration of drugs

The most recent studies with regard to IUI suggest that better results can be achieved when the IUI is combined with mild ovarian stimulation for the production of more than one egg. In this case the woman takes medication to bring about the maturation of several follicles – eggs, and thus increase the chances that the sperm comes into contact with one of these eggs.

However, we should be careful not to provoke the production of more than 3 follicles, since this would increase the chance of a multiple pregnancy – one of the major complications of assisted reproduction. The final maturation of the follicles and the oocytes is carried out by administering an injection hormone (hCG).  36 hours after receiving this injection, the egg is released from the follicle and everything is ready to perform the insemination.

The most commonly used drug is clomiphene citrate, which is administered orally in the form of a pill. By taking this drug the brain receives the message that not enough estrogen is produced, which indirectly stimulates the ovaries to produce eggs. The human chorionic gonadotropin hormone, commonly known as hHG is available in injection form. This hormone induces the final maturation of the oocyte, as well as the best possible programmed release of the egg from the ovary.

Is this process really painless?2019-06-28T08:30:27+00:00

This process, as already mentioned above, is completely pain free for the female partner and is performed within a very short time period after receiving the sperm. Following the insemination, the female partner is able to carry on with her daily program without any problems.

What is the success percentage for the process of insemination and how many times will it be repeated?2019-06-28T12:20:41+00:00

The success rates for cycles involving a controlled mild ovarian stimulation range from 10-20% for each attempt, under the conditions that the sperm displays parameters within normal limits and the tubes are traversable. If a pregnancy is not achieved after an average of 4 well studied IUI attempts, then the usual practice is to proceed with an IVF, since the procedure we are following is insufficient for a treatment. In addition, the more time lapses without achieving the more a woman’s anxiety increases, thus adding a further serious obstacle towards a successful result.
