Project Description

In Vitro Maturation (IVM)

The maturation of eggs outside a woman’s body is a new method with a huge prospective for the future. This means that women, who are sensitive to the effects of stimulation drugs, can avoid their widespread impact if their oocytes are collected from the ovaries at an early stage. The further maturation of the oocytes takes place in the laboratory under special circumstances and with the use of the appropriate means.

Specifically, although to a limited extent, today this method is used in cases where women have a high sensitivity to stimulation drugs.

Also this method is used in other cases, some of which are:

  • In cases of women suffering from poly-cystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and display an increased incidence of ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome.

  • In cases where hormonal treatment with IVF drugs may be considered detrimental to the woman’s health, for example in cases of women that have a history of cancer.

  • In cases where a woman is not facing any infertility problems, but wishes to avoid or reduce the use of IVF drugs.

At the present time very few clinics across the world apply this particular technique, with low success rates, since there are still many aspects that need to be discovered for it to be used on a wider basis.

The safety of this technique is difficult to prove if we take into account that until early 2007 only 300 children worldwide were born with the method of in vitro maturation of oocytes. Despite the fact that today the method is applied with caution, its widespread use in the future is promising.
